AI pet portrait or traditional art commission: which should you choose?
Understand what you are buying: a digitally created painterly image, a physical original, or a printed reproduction—and choose for your priorities.
An AI pet portrait and a traditional art commission are different kinds of artwork. Choose an AI-assisted portrait when you want to explore a painterly interpretation of your photo and review a digital preview. Choose a traditional commission when owning an original made by a particular artist is central to the experience. Neither label alone tells you whether the likeness or finished product will suit you.
Separate the image from the object
There are two questions: how was the picture created, and what will arrive? A digital image can be printed on paper or canvas. A physical canvas print is not the same thing as an original painting with pigment applied by hand.
Fable creates AI-assisted painterly portraits from uploaded photographs. Its style samples may suggest oil brushwork, but that description should not be read as a promise of a unique painted original. Review the current product description for the digital or physical item you select.
Decide what matters about the process
For some buyers, the relationship with an individual painter, their interpretation and the original physical surface are the point of the commission. If that is your priority, ask the artist directly about their medium, process, revisions and what the quoted price includes.
For others, the main goal is a recognisable image of a pet in a particular visual style, with the chance to inspect a preview before buying. That is where a photo-based digital route can be useful. Avoid choosing on the basis of an assumed price or turnaround difference; those vary by provider and product.
Judge likeness in either route
Whichever process you choose, start with a clear reference and explain to yourself which features make the pet recognisable. Ear shape, muzzle length, eye placement and coat markings are useful checkpoints.
With Fable, inspect the free watermarked preview before ordering. Do not accept an unfamiliar animal because the texture looks convincing. Our likeness review guide provides a step-by-step check.
For a commissioned work, ask what kind of review is offered before you commit. Do not assume a particular artist offers the same preview, changes or cancellation terms as a digital service.
Read the product description carefully
For physical artwork, check dimensions, material, framing and shipping details. For a digital file, check what is supplied and its usage terms. If you plan to print elsewhere, confirm the file requirements with the printer rather than enlarging a preview screenshot.
Words such as “painterly”, “oil-style” and “canvas” describe different things. Painterly may refer to the visual treatment; canvas may refer to the substrate of a print. Ask for clarification if an offer does not make the distinction clear.
Use the sample as a style reference
The Presence style shown here is a catalogue example of a quiet pet portrait against a dark ground. It helps you judge whether that artistic direction appeals to you. It is not a customer's testimonial or evidence that every uploaded photograph will produce the same quality of likeness.
Fable's preview is free and watermarked; finished digital artwork and physical products are paid. Try a Presence portrait if a digital painterly interpretation fits your goal, or choose an artist-led physical commission if the original object and individual painting process are what you want.
