Atelier Editions
A contemporary Surrealium colour interpretation, not a claim to recover the artist's intended colours.
artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606–1669)
Museum original and attributionIn 1647, Rembrandt van Rijn created this portrait of the respected physician Ephraim Bonus. The original work is a celebrated black-and-white etching, capturing its subject in a moment of quiet contemplation at the base of a staircase. Known for its dramatic lighting and composition, it is a masterwork of the Dutch Baroque period.
This Atelier Edition is a contemporary, AI-assisted colour interpretation by Surrealium. Working from the historic plate, we have reimagined the scene with a palette of rich umber, warm ochre, soft gold, and restrained crimson. The result is a new work that explores the interplay of concentrated light and deep, warm shadows, offering a different emotional register than the original etching.
Our exclusive colour edition is available to all as a fine-art print or gallery canvas, with no subscription required. For active Fable subscribers, further customization of the portrait is also available.
Each piece is made to order as an archival fine-art print on heavyweight, museum-grade matte paper, using pigment inks rated for longevity. This exclusive edition is prepared by the Surrealium atelier at Kastellet, a 17th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago.
