Atelier Editions
A contemporary Surrealium colour interpretation, not a claim to recover the artist's intended colours.
artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606–1669)
Museum original and attributionThis work begins with an intimate self-portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn, etched around 1630. In the original black and white composition, a young Rembrandt confronts the viewer with a confident gaze, his face emerging from deep shadow into a focused light. The work is a masterclass in chiaroscuro, capturing the artist's ambition and psychological depth with an economy of line.
This Atelier Edition is a contemporary color interpretation by Surrealium. Using the original etching as a foundation, our studio has digitally rendered a new palette of warm umber, rich ochre, and burnished gold, accented with a restrained crimson. The result is a version that amplifies the original's dramatic lighting, reimagining the portrait with a warmth and painterly depth that is entirely unique to this edition.
This exclusive Surrealium interpretation is available to all as a fine-art print or gallery canvas, with no subscription required. Fable members with an active subscription can use our studio tools to further customize the work and explore their own color variations.
Each piece is made to order in the EU as an archival print on heavyweight, museum-grade matte paper, using pigment-based inks rated for longevity. This edition is developed and presented by the Surrealium atelier, located at Kastellet, a 17th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago.
