Martin Schongauer's c. 1485 engraving captured the European imagination with a creature few had ever seen. One of the earliest known prints of an elephant, it shows the animal in profile, complete with a decorative saddle, or howdah. This Atelier Edition is a new, AI-assisted colour interpretation by Surrealium, created to explore the historic masterwork through a modern lens.

Working from the original black-and-white composition, this edition introduces a palette of mineral blue, muted gold, and warm rose. The colours are inspired by the luminous precision of Northern Renaissance painting, lending the historic engraving a fresh, painterly quality that brings warmth and quiet dignity to a space, bridging the gap between a historic study and contemporary wall art.

This exclusive Surrealium edition is available as an archival fine-art print or gallery canvas without a Fable membership; subscribers may also access tools for further customization. Each piece is printed to order on heavyweight, matte museum-grade paper with archival pigment inks for vivid, lasting color. The edition has been prepared and certified by the Surrealium atelier at Kastellet, a 17th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago.
