Death and the Miser

A surreal Renaissance masterpiece by Hieronymus Bosch, reproduced as a museum-quality archival print or gallery canvas.

Death and the Miser by Hieronymus Bosch — archival fine-art print from Fable

In this tall, narrow composition, a dramatic moral struggle unfolds within a vaulted bedchamber. A skeletal figure of Death enters through a doorway on the left, aiming an arrow at a dying man in a canopied bed. An angel supports the frail figure, gesturing upward toward a crucifix illuminated by a single beam of divine light from a high window. Yet earthly temptations remain close at hand. Grotesque, fantastical demons lurk in the shadows, offering a bag of gold from beneath the bed curtains and hoarding coins inside a heavy wooden chest at the foot of the bed, where a man in a green robe deposits his wealth. Discarded armor and weapons lie in the foreground, symbols of worldly power left behind.

The palette is a study in contrasts, balancing the warm, earthy browns of the wooden architecture with the vivid coral and pink tones of the bed drapery. Muted olive greens and pale bone whites add to the eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. The interplay of deep shadow and focused light creates a mood of quiet tension and surreal mystery, drawing the eye through the complex narrative layers of the room.

This intricate narrative piece serves as a profound focal point for a study, library, or eclectic living room. Its vertical format makes it an excellent choice for narrow wall spaces or as an anchor in a gallery wall of classic and vintage art. The surreal motifs invite close inspection, adding depth and historical intrigue to dark academia, traditional, or maximalist interiors.

Painted by the Dutch Renaissance master Hieronymus Bosch between 1485 and 1490, this work exemplifies his legendary ability to blend religious allegory with bizarre, imaginative creatures. Prepared for print by Surrealium at Vaxholm Fortress, Sweden, from the museum's scan, this piece is available as a museum-grade archival print or gallery canvas. Each piece is made to order using matte museum-grade paper and archival pigment inks, ensuring the intricate details and rich colors of Bosch's original oil on oak panel are preserved for generations.
