Saint George and the Dragon

A dramatic Renaissance masterwork of chivalric legend, presented as an archival fine-art print or gallery canvas.

Saint George and the Dragon by Sodoma — archival fine-art print from Fable

This High Renaissance masterpiece by Sodoma captures the climactic moment of chivalric legend. A knight in gleaming armour atop a muscular steed drives his lance into a writhing dragon, his crimson cloak billowing dramatically behind him. To the left, a regal maiden in red and gold robes watches in awe, her hands clasped in prayer. The scene is set against a sprawling, meticulously detailed landscape featuring slender trees, a fortified city in the distance, and an angel appearing in the sky, blessing the encounter.

The palette is rich and saturated, dominated by the vivid reds of the figures' garments, the deep greens of the forest canopy and the dragon's scales, and the soft, atmospheric blues of the distant city and sky. The meticulous handling of light brings a sculptural quality to the figures and the horse, while the verdant landscape offers a serene counterpoint to the violent struggle in the foreground.

As a fine-art print or gallery canvas, this work brings a sense of historic grandeur and narrative drama to an interior. Its classical composition and vibrant colours make it a commanding focal point for a formal living room, a study, or above a mantle. It pairs exceptionally well with antique furnishings, dark woods, and traditional or eclectic decor, adding a layer of mythic storytelling to the space.

Painted around 1518 by the Italian High Renaissance artist Il Sodoma, the original oil on panel is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. This faithful recreation is produced using archival pigment inks on museum-grade matte paper or gallery canvas, ensuring the luminous colours and intricate details endure. Each piece is made to order, prepared for print by Surrealium at Vaxholm Fortress, Sweden.
