This is a contemporary Atelier Edition from Surrealium, a new color interpretation of the celebrated etching The Hall with Lanterns. The original black-and-white masterwork was created by the 18th-century artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi for his Carceri d'invenzione (Imaginary Prisons) series, a collection of fantastical and monumental architectural scenes.

Our digital interpretation reimagines the original with a palette of weathered limestone, patinated bronze, and muted verdigris, set against deep blue shadows. Developed with assistance from Surrealium's digital tools, this new color composition transforms the monochromatic original into a work of atmospheric light, emphasizing a sense of impossible scale and dreamlike depth.

This exclusive Surrealium edition is offered as a fine-art print or gallery canvas and can be purchased without a subscription. Active Fable subscribers gain the ability to create their own custom color interpretations of the work. As wall art, it brings a haunting, mystical quality to a room, serving as a dramatic focal point in a living room, study, or minimalist bedroom.

Each piece is printed to order on heavyweight, archival matte paper using pigment-based inks designed to last. The original etching is credited to Giovanni Battista Piranesi, with this contemporary color edition rendered by the Surrealium atelier at Kastellet, a 17th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago.
