This iconic portrait of Leonardo da Vinci is based on a celebrated 1817 engraving by the Italian printmaker Raffaello Morghen. Working in the Romantic style, Morghen was himself interpreting a red chalk drawing widely believed to be a self-portrait by Leonardo. The original monochrome engraving, held in the collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art, is a masterwork of line and shadow, capturing the wisdom and intensity of the archetypal Renaissance man.

This Atelier Edition is an exclusive contemporary interpretation by Surrealium, reimagining the historic engraving in full colour. Using sophisticated digital tools, a unique palette of muted earth pigments, warm umber, and soft olive tones was developed, rendered with the subtle, smoky transitions of Leonardo's own sfumato technique. The result is a new vision of a timeless subject, bridging a 19th-century engraving and a modern digital canvas.

This exclusive Surrealium Edition is available to all as an archival fine-art print or gallery-wrapped canvas. While anyone can acquire this interpretation, Fable subscribers have the additional ability to customize the work. Every piece is printed to order on heavyweight, matte museum-grade paper with archival pigment inks for rich, lasting colour. This edition is prepared for print by the Surrealium atelier at Kastellet, a 17th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago.
