Shimada, Tokaido Road

A classic ukiyo-e landscape by master artist Katsushika Hokusai. Available as an archival fine-art print or gallery canvas.

Shimada, Tokaido Road by Katsushika Hokusai 葛飾 北斎
Japanese, 1760-1849 — archival fine-art print from Fable

In this iconic scene from Edo-period Japan, a procession of travelers and porters makes its way across the shallows of the Ōi River at Shimada station. Hokusai captures the energy of the crossing, with some figures wading through the cool water while others are carried aloft on wooden litters. The low horizon and flattened perspective draw the eye across the wide expanse of the river, toward the distant village nestled below misty mountains.

The print's palette is grounded in serene earth tones, pale blues, and soft greens, reflecting the natural landscape. This understated color scheme creates a tranquil, narrative atmosphere, inviting calm contemplation. In a room, it introduces a sense of history and quiet movement, making it a sophisticated and peaceful focal point.

As wall art, this piece offers remarkable versatility. Its clean composition complements both modern and minimalist interiors, while its historical subject matter enriches classic or eclectic decor. It makes a compelling statement as a large canvas print above a sofa or bed, or as a fine-art print in a study or hallway gallery wall.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) is a master of the Japanese ukiyo-e genre, and this work is a fine example from his famous "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" series. Our archival reproduction is printed to order on heavyweight, matte museum-grade paper with pigment inks that ensure fidelity and permanence. Each print is digitally restored and certified by the Surrealium atelier at Kastellet, a 17th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago, preserving the character of the original woodblock.
