Instant tarot reading: three cards for the question on your mind

When a question will not wait, a three-card reading takes about a minute. How to ask, what to look at first, and when an instant reading is not the right tool.

Some questions arrive at eleven at night and will not wait for an appointment. An instant tarot reading is made for those moments: about a minute from question to cards, with nothing to sign up for. You can begin right here.

About a minute, in three steps

  1. Choose what is calling for your attention: love and connection, purpose and direction, change and becoming, or creative life. If you like, type your question in a sentence.
  2. Draw. The deck is shuffled and three cards are laid in their places: the root, the threshold and the invitation.
  3. Turn the cards. All three are shown, and your first card is read in full straight away, free.

You need no email, photo or account to begin, and your answers stay private.

Questions that work in a minute

A quick reading rewards a clear question. Keep it to one situation, and ask about yourself rather than about someone else's choices:

  • What do I most need to see about this relationship today?
  • What am I avoiding in this decision?
  • What would make tomorrow's conversation go better?
  • Where is my energy going that I did not choose?
  • What small step would move this project forward this week?
  • What is this restlessness trying to tell me?

If you only have a minute with your cards, read them in this order:

  • Look before you read. What is happening in each picture? Two people joining hands, a chariot drawn forward, a hero raising his club over a lion: your first impression is part of the reading.
  • Check which way up they fell. A reversed card is the same card turned inward, delayed or overdone, not a bad omen.
  • Start with the middle card. The threshold is where your question is read; it is the card closest to now.
  • End with the last card. The invitation is one thing to do, small enough to begin today.

Your first card, the root, is read for you in full. The complete reading adds the threshold with your own question, the invitation, and the thread between all three, as an illustrated PDF with a portrait painted from your cards, for $39 once or one credit on Creator, Studio or Pro.

If you want a yes or no

Tarot is better at "how" and "what" than at "whether". Turn the yes-or-no question into an open one and you get an answer you can use: "Should I take the job?" becomes "What do I need to know before I decide about this job?" If the invitation card is warm and outward, like the Sun or the Star, read it as a green light to take the next step. If it asks you to wait or to look inward, like the Hermit or the Hanged Man, give the question a few more days.

When an instant reading is not the right tool

A minute with three cards can settle a restless mind, but it is no substitute for a doctor, a lawyer or a financial adviser, and it does not predict what will happen. If something is urgent, speak to someone who can help today. When you want to know more about how the cards are drawn and read, see real tarot online and how a three-card reading works.
