Atelier Editions
A contemporary Surrealium colour interpretation, not a claim to recover the artist's intended colours.
artist: Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606–1669)
Museum original and attributionThis work begins with a masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age: Rembrandt van Rijn's 1638 etching, Self-Portrait in a Velvet Cap with Plume. This special Atelier Edition is not a historical reproduction, but a new, contemporary colour interpretation by Surrealium, using digital tools to explore the portrait's light and shadow in a new medium.
The palette is an interpretive study in warmth and depth. Rich umber, earth-toned ochre, and warm gold are punctuated by a restrained crimson in the artist's attire. The colour treatment honours Rembrandt's original composition, amplifying the concentrated light on the face and the deep, enveloping shadows that give the portrait its dramatic power.
This archival print of our interpretation is available for purchase without a subscription. It makes a dramatic statement in classic and modern interiors, suited for a living room, study, or as a focal point of a gallery wall. Fable members with an active subscription may also use the original work as a basis for their own custom portrait styles.
This archival edition is prepared by the Surrealium atelier at Kastellet, a 17th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago. Each piece is made to order as a museum-grade fine-art print on heavyweight matte paper, using archival pigment inks for lasting colour and detail.
