A contemporary Surrealium colour interpretation, not a claim to recover the artist's intended colours.
Bernard Picart and other engravers, Le Temple des Muses (1749 edition)
Museum original and attributionA ship struggles through a night storm beneath the protection of Castor and Pollux. The chapter explains why the twins were worshipped as guardians of navigation and recounts the appearance of paired flames during the Argonauts' voyage. Their light becomes a sign that the tempest will end.
The text distinguishes that fortunate double appearance from a single ominous flame. Wave, mast, lightning and darkness make the engraving a concentrated seascape of danger and hope, with the protective sign understood through the story preserved in the adjoining pages.
Historical context is adapted from the accompanying commentary by Antoine de La Barre de Beaumarchais. Its interpretations reflect the period in which the book was published.
This edition follows plate 28 in Le Temple des Muses. The complete historical page and its explanatory text remain available in the source record. The inner illustration has been straightened and extracted from its surrounding engraved frame, caption and paper. The comparison shows that extracted engraving beside Surrealium's contemporary colour interpretation.
Surrealium's contemporary AI-assisted colour interpretation takes this print as its starting point. The colours are interpretive choices made for this edition.
