A monogram for your embosser, seal or stamp

How to design a monogram that works pressed into paper, wax or ink, and what to ask an embosser or seal maker for when you take them your files.

Marks that are pressed, not printed

An embosser raises your monogram out of the paper. A wax seal presses it into wax. A rubber stamp inks it onto a bag or a card. All three are older than printing, and all three are unforgiving: fine lines fill in, tiny gaps disappear and anything too detailed turns into a blur.

One monogram, three ways

A brass embosser with an S and A monogram, the same monogram blind-embossed on ivory paper and pressed into a green wax seal on an envelope.

Preview your monogram

Studio Arden’s SA monogram appears here three times: on a brass embosser, blind-embossed on ivory paper and pressed into a green wax seal on an envelope. The letters are bold, the crossing is clear and there is a ring around the outside to hold it together.

What makes a monogram pressable

Strong strokes with clear space between them. Two or three letters at most. A border that defines the edge. Roman capitals, like these overlapping letters from an old plate, are easier to press than delicate script.

Getting it made

Embosser, seal and stamp makers work from a clean black-and-white file. Ask them what size the die or seal will be and send the monogram at that size so you can check it first. Fable’s Business pack includes brand files for the web along with your design; any maker can work from a clean image of the mark.

Where to use it

Emboss your letterhead and certificates, seal wedding invitations and client envelopes, stamp the bags of a bakery or the tags of a farm shop. The same monogram on every surface becomes your signature.

Choosing the wax

Sealing wax comes in sticks for a wick and in glue-gun beads. Flexible wax survives the post better than traditional brittle wax. Deep green, oxblood and navy show a monogram best; gold wax looks festive but can hide fine detail.
