Tissot's July: how to look at a summer portrait from 1878

A white dress, yellow ribbons and the sea behind a striped awning: a close reading of James Tissot's Seaside (July: Specimen of a Portrait).

It is high summer, and someone has pulled the awning down against the glare. Inside, on a chintz sofa, a young woman leans back with her head propped on one hand and looks straight at us. Outside, the sea is bright and the sand is pale; two tiny figures stand at the water's edge. In here it is shaded and still.

James Tissot painted Seaside (July: Specimen of a Portrait) in 1878, in oil on fabric. It is one of the Masterworks in Fable's collection, and it rewards slow looking.

Two worlds, one window

James Tissot's Seaside (July: Specimen of a Portrait), 1878: a woman with red-gold hair reclines on a floral sofa in a white ruffled dress tied with pale yellow ribbons; behind her, a raised window with a striped awning opens onto the beach and sea.

The composition is built on a contrast. The top half of the picture is the window: a raised sash, a striped awning with tasselled cords, and beyond it a strip of bright sea and sand, where two small figures — one with a spot of red — stand near the waves. The bottom half is the room: a sofa covered in a dark floral chintz, an olive-gold cushion, and the sitter herself.

Everything outside is quick and luminous. Everything inside is close, soft and carefully described. The window frames the beach like a picture within the picture, and the woman sits with her back to it, more interested in us than in the view.

Fashion as the subject

Tissot had an eye for fashion as sharp as his eye for feeling, and here the dress is almost a second sitter. Look at it from top to bottom: a yellow bow at the throat, ruffled cuffs tied with more yellow ribbon, and a long white skirt that falls in tier after tier of pleated flounces, with yellow bows scattered down its length.

The colour scheme is disciplined: white, pale yellow and the olive of the cushion against the dark sofa and the soft blues of the sea. That restraint is why the picture feels fresh rather than fussy, despite all the ruffles.

A specimen of a portrait

The subtitle is unusual. It presents the picture almost as a sample — a specimen — of what a portrait can be. And it is a different kind of portrait from the formal standing or seated figures of earlier centuries: relaxed, informal, set in a particular season and a particular afternoon, with the sitter caught mid-thought rather than posed for posterity.

That mix of careful portraiture and an interest in light and everyday modern life is why the painting sits comfortably beside the Impressionists, even though its finish is far smoother than theirs. Fable's collection files it under Impressionism.

Living with July

Room visualization of Seaside (July: Specimen of a Portrait): the print in a gold frame on green botanical wallpaper above a teak sideboard, with a lamp and a velvet armchair.

The picture is vertical, so it suits a narrow wall or a spot above a bed, a sofa or a reading chair. Its soft blues, greys and whites bring calm to a bedroom or a library, and its summer light is a welcome thing to look at in December. As the room above shows, it can hold its own against patterned wallpaper as long as the frame is simple and warm.

Fable offers it as an archival fine-art print, made to order on heavyweight matte paper with pigment inks. See Seaside as a print, with current prices and print options.

Stepping into it

Tissot's sitter is also one of the paintings you can step into. In a masterwork portrait, the composition stays — the sofa, the window, the dress and the pose — and the face and hair come from your photo.
