The Fable Difference

Your taste is enough. See how Fable brings art history, artist curation and its own technology to AI portraits, paintings and personal design.

Your taste is enough. You should be able to recognise a beautiful painting, choose the world you want to enter, and create something personal—without first learning how to describe every decision an artist makes.

That is the Fable difference. ChatGPT and Gemini can make striking images. Fable brings historical research, the judgment of working artists and its own image-making technology to a more focused question: how do you make art you would actually want to live with?

If you are choosing an AI portrait generator—or wondering why you would use Fable instead of ChatGPT or Gemini—start with the images. Below are personal portraits, original art ideas, a coat of arms and a monogram. The subject photographs are the same, and every consumer prompt is visible.

How to read this comparison

This is a Fable editorial demonstration, begun on 17 October 2026 and refined on 18 October, not a blind model benchmark. Portrait and Artist images are curated studio and catalogue examples. Heraldry examples were newly generated: the crest is the third attempt; the AE is a studio-directed custom-brief result selected from five AE attempts. Its brief and palette differ from the consumer examples. Earlier Fable results remain available in the brief details. Consumer results are the first outputs for their displayed briefs.

For every portrait, we uploaded the exact original subject photograph—or photographs—to both ChatGPT and Gemini. We supplied the same displayed prompt to both services in fresh chats. The first completed result for each final brief is shown, without aesthetic retouching or selecting a weaker alternative. The Artist briefs use everyday subject descriptions without art-movement names; Fable’s curated examples already have an artistic direction.

The browser settings were ChatGPT Instant and Gemini Flash. These are interface labels; the exact underlying image-model versions were not exposed. The minimal-prompt portrait is a separate test. Earlier exploratory trials are excluded; the final briefs and selection record are retained by the studio.

All painting prompts requested a vertical 4:5 canvas. Every result is displayed in full, without cropping or stretching, inside an equal 4:5 viewing area; native output dimensions can vary slightly. Artist uses a subject description rather than a source photo. Heraldry designs retain their full native canvas.

1. A summer you can step into

You know the feeling before you know the words: an unhurried afternoon, a floral sofa, the sea just beyond the room. In Fable, you choose Seaside July and add your photograph. The artistic direction is already there.

Compare the treatment of the face with the surrounding fabrics and light. Fable carries the sitter into a particular painted world: the cream dress, yellow ribbons and floral upholstery belong to the same composition. The consumer tools interpret the description in their own ways.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a painted portrait of the woman in this photo, sitting on a floral sofa in an indoor patio by the sea, with the beach outside. Vertical 4:5 canvas.”

In Fable: Seaside July selected in Fable Portraits, with the original subject photo. The displayed Fable image is an existing curated example, not a new run of the comparison prompt.

The starting point is James Tissot’s Seaside (July: Specimen of a Portrait), 1878. Its floral upholstery, relaxed sitter and glimpse of the beach give this scene its identity. Museum record.

2. A very good dog. A proper portrait.

A pet portrait should feel as considered as any other family portrait. Here the same Labrador photograph goes into both consumer tools; Fable’s example brings the dog into the Seaside July setting.

The pale bow is a small detail, but it ties the sitter to the room. Look at the relationship between fur, upholstery and daylight, and how each result balances a recognisable companion with a complete painting.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a painted portrait of the dog in this photo, sitting on a floral sofa in an indoor patio by the sea, with the beach outside. Give the dog a pale yellow bow. Vertical 4:5 canvas.”

In Fable: Seaside July, with the dog’s original photograph. No written description of the room, brushwork or costume is needed from the customer.

3. A whole atmosphere from a few words

Portraits begin with someone you love. Fable Artist can begin with an idea: fishing boats under a burning sunset. Choose an artistic direction and describe the subject. There is no reference photograph to prepare.

ChatGPT chooses a brilliant orange sunset; Gemini builds a cooler harbour at dusk. Fable’s curated piece holds its boats in deeper shadow, with the light broken across sky and water. All three interpret the harbour beautifully in different ways. In Fable, you can choose the visual tradition before describing the subject.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a painting of a fishing harbour. Vertical 4:5.”

In Fable: Curated Made with Fable Artist selection 11, labelled Impressionism. “Fishing boats under a burning sunset” is its editorial subject description; it is not a recovered original generation prompt. The consumer images interpret that subject afresh.

The image is the surface. The difference is everything behind it.

A short customer journey can conceal a long artistic process. Fable’s simplicity comes from decisions made before you arrive: what to study, what to preserve, which colours belong together, how a composition should hold, and how a digital image should read as a painting.

An archive with a long memory

Our research brings together thousands of pages, hundreds of historical books, thousands of paintings and colour swatches. Some of the original sources behind that research are more than a thousand years old. They give the studio a vocabulary of composition, ornament, colour and symbolism that extends far beyond a fashionable prompt.

The judgment of real artists

At Vaxholm Fortress, a 16th-century sea fortress in the Stockholm archipelago, the artists of Surrealium, the atelier behind Fable, study and curate that material. A reference enters the product because of what it can become: a coherent portrait direction, an evocative palette, a useful visual choice. The archive matters because people make something of it.

Technology between the model and the finished work

Fable develops its own image-processing and finishing systems alongside generative AI. These systems work on colour relationships, tonal character and painterly surfaces, with treatments tailored to the work. The finished image can involve more than the output of a single prompt; it is the result of a designed process.

Many models. One place to create.

Across Fable’s wider system, more than 50 model integrations support different tasks. You do not have to choose between provider model names, open accounts with each provider, manage separate AI subscriptions or learn prompt engineering. You choose the art and the subject; Fable handles the underlying workflow.

Fable’s identity grows from the archive, the artists’ curation, the creation experience and the technology that brings them together. As AI models improve, those capabilities can enter a creative world that already has a point of view.

4. Everyone belongs in the painting

A family photograph contains several personalities at once. A successful portrait needs to hold them together: parents, children, the family dog, and the small relationships between them.

The difference is especially visible in the clothes and the painted surface. Fable places the family in a period-inspired scene, with broken colour running through the figures, furniture and carpet. ChatGPT and Gemini keep contemporary knitwear and jeans. The same people become three different ideas of a family portrait.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a painting of my family and dog sitting together in an elegant warm living room. Vertical 4:5.”

In Fable: Madame Charpentier family style, with the same original family photograph. Fable’s finished image is an approved style-studio example.

Renoir painted Madame Georges Charpentier and Her Children in 1878. Fable draws on the intimacy and social setting of the historical portrait while making room for a different family. Museum record.

5. Flowers with a sense of time

A vase of flowers can be bright, delicate, theatrical or quiet. The subject alone does not decide the painting. Palette, light, space and the treatment of surfaces do much of the work.

Fable’s curated floral study gathers pinks, yellows and deep greens against a restrained ground. The glass, stems and fallen petals make a composed still life. Compare that chosen direction with each tool’s interpretation of a simple request for flowers in a vase.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a painting of summer flowers in a glass vase. Vertical 4:5.”

In Fable: Curated Made with Fable Artist selection 7, labelled Baroque. “Summer flowers in a glass vase, old Dutch light” is an editorial subject description, not a verified original generation prompt.

The same two source photographs are supplied to ChatGPT and Gemini here. Look at the scale of the dog, the sitter’s pose, and how naturally the pair share the sofa. The task is to make a relationship visible as well as a likeness.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a painted portrait of the woman and dog in these photos together on a floral sofa in an indoor patio by the sea, with the beach outside. Vertical 4:5 canvas.”

7. A family story, told in symbols

Heraldry turns a story into a visual language. For this new design, the Lindqvist family brief was simple: a love of the sea, an oak for strength, a lighthouse for guidance, and three stars for three children.

Fable: third attempt, with the name ribbon and taller composition requested explicitly. ChatGPT and Gemini: unchanged first outputs. Equal 4:5 viewing areas; Fable’s complete vertical design is placed on an ivory field. No cropping or retouching.

The refined Fable design gives Lindqvist its own name ribbon above the shield, with the motto below. Deep blue foliage and a warm ivory ground create a clear, graphic family emblem. The full design is shown without cropping, on a matching ivory presentation field.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a blue and gold coat of arms for the Lindqvist family, with a lighthouse, an oak tree and three stars for our three children. Add the motto “Fortitudine et amore”. Vertical 4:5 canvas.”

In Fable: Refined in Fable Heraldry after the owner requested a visible family name and a taller composition. Family: Lindqvist. Colours: Blue and Gold. Motto: Fortitudine et amore. Story: “We love the sea and old oaks. A lighthouse for guidance, an oak for strength, and three stars for our three children. Please write LINDQVIST clearly on a name ribbon, and put the motto on a separate ribbon. Use rich blue and gold, with an ivory background. Make the whole coat of arms tall and elegant, with beautiful engraved detail and flowing blue-and-gold leaves around the shield.” This is the third Fable crest attempt overall. The result retains red dividing lines and repeats the three-star motif in two quarters. Both earlier Fable attempts remain available below.

8. Two letters. A Gothic signature.

AE, with the presence of an illuminated manuscript. Tall, angular gold letters, pointed arches and an oxblood-and-black patterned ground turn two initials into a bold heraldic composition.

Fable: studio-directed AE, selected from five AE results, with a more detailed brief and a different palette. ChatGPT and Gemini: unchanged first outputs of their short blue-and-gold brief. Complete canvases in equal 4:5 viewing areas; no cropping, stretching or retouching.

The new Fable design gives the initials much more of the vertical canvas. Sharp blackletter stems and cathedral-like tracery replace the earlier rounded flourishes; antique gold stands against a richly patterned red-and-black field. This is a studio-directed Heraldry example, made with a detailed custom brief.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Create a Gothic monogram with the initials AE in blue and gold on an ivory background. Vertical 4:5.”

In Fable: For this studio refinement we used the custom story field in Fable Heraldry’s coat-of-arms flow to request a monogram composition, with Red, Black and Gold selected. This is the first of two custom-brief results, selected after three earlier AE results from the four-look monogram creator. It is a native 928 × 1152 image. The engine retained a shield-shaped field and a pale outer margin, despite the brief asking for neither; the complete original is shown. It is not the output of the simple initials-only flow or the same prompt as the consumer examples. Exact story brief: “An illuminated Gothic AE monogram as a tall heraldic artwork. Only the two initials A and E, interwoven but clearly readable, in authentic angular Textura blackletter: tall narrow upright strokes, diamond terminals, pointed arches, broken curves, sharp medieval penwork. Monumental antique-gold letters occupy about 80% of the image height and 85% of its width, close to the edges with a narrow breathing margin. A rich full-bleed oxblood and blackened-plum ground, subtle tooled-leather texture and delicate gold diaper pattern. Fine manuscript illumination and restrained cathedral tracery woven into the letterforms, exquisite engraved details and burnished gold highlights. The letters are the hero, not a small badge. Vertical 4:5 composition, full canvas, no white border, no pale empty margin, no shield, no crown, no helmet, no animals, no ribbon and no extra words. Distinctly medieval Gothic, not rounded Victorian scroll lettering.” All earlier AE results remain available below.

9. What if you only write one sentence?

We also tried a shorter brief with the same source photograph: “Paint me sitting on a sofa by the sea.” Compare this separate test with the more descriptive request in section 1. The first output from each provider is shown in both.

A short sentence leaves many choices open: the sofa, clothing, architecture, palette and painting tradition. Fable lets you make much of that artistic choice visually, by choosing Seaside July. Brevity can still produce an attractive image; the question is whether it produces the particular world you had in mind.

The prompt in ChatGPT & Gemini: “Paint me sitting on a sofa by the sea. Vertical 4:5.”

In Fable: The same curated Seaside July example shown in section 1, repeated as the reference for this separate minimal-prompt test. No new Fable generation was made.
